Remembering public sector customers

The Postal Services Act 2000 places an obligation on Postwatch to represent all customers - a responsibilty we take very seriously.

We endeavour to represent social customers by receiving and (as far as possible) resolving their complaints through our Contact Centre in Belfast, by engaging with local consumers through our Regional Teams and Regional Committees, and by conducting independent research.

We engage with private sector businesses through bodies like the Trade Association Forum and the Personal and Small Business Mail Users Group.

But we are aware that we must not forget the public sector. National and local government plus the education and health sectors are enormous users of mail and, so far, few bodies in this sector have taken advantage of the competitive choice which is now available in the postal marketplace.

A few days ago, on behalf of Postwatch I addressed a meeting in Guildford of the Mailing Services Commodity Group of the Government Department DEFRA. One of the things we discussed is how Postwatch can work more closely with public sector customers of the mails service through bodies like the Postal Users' Forum of the Office of Government Commerce.

Why wasn't this sorted out before the introduction of liberalisation? You knew all too well that other private operators would only target large bulk mailings and cherry pick.
