High Standards at Royal Mail
Royal Mail’s quality of service is measured against 12 targets, and for the period April to September Royal Mail met or exceeded 11 of these targets. In previous years Royal Mail has failed to achieve many of the set targets, so it is encouraging that for the first time since targets were introduced as part of Royal Mail’s licence in 2001, Royal Mail has a realistic chance of exceeding all of its quality of service targets for the full year.
The headline figures from the report show that 94.4% of 1st class mail arrived next day (target 93%) and 99.1% of 2nd class mail arrived within 3 days (target 98.5%). The best performing postcode area in terms of 1st class mail was Swindon, which managed to ensure 97.4% of 1st class mail arrived the next day after posting.
Standard Parcels continued to perform above target, with performance recorded at 94.7% (target 90%). This performance was the best performance for this product since standards of service measurements were introduced, up 0.5% from Quarter 1 2006-07.
Performance for Special Delivery from April to September continued to exceed its target of 99%, recording a performance of 99.1% for the period. This is encouraging, since Special Delivery is a premium Royal Mail product, and had frequently failed to achieve its target in the past.
In terms of Royal Mail achieving its Universal Service Obligation (USO), the quality of service results showed 99.95% of collection points are being served each day (target 99.9%), and 99.98% of delivery routes are completed each day (target 99.9%).
Royal Mail is also delivering more items correctly than previously, with 99.65% of mail being delivered to the correct address or addressee (target 99.5%).
The overall picture painted by the quality of service results is encouraging. Postwatch are pleased to commend Royal Mail on their performance, and hope the continued improvement in terms of quality of service continues.
