Where does Aunt Joan live?
Postwatch's top tips for getting the most from your post this Christmas are:-
- Only choose cards for posting that fit the new 'standard letter' size. See link to our Pricing in Proportion guide.
- Use the full postal address including the post code. Millions of cards are undelivered every year because the address is incomplete. You cannot expect Royal Mail to know where Aunt Joan lives unless you tell them!
- Add a return address to your cards. This will show you which friends have moved, and even perhaps prompt those that have not to send one to you.
- Use 2nd class stamps. The basic 2nd class stamp costs only 23 pence, 9 pence less than 1st class.
- Please post early. There is no need for a last minute rush.

So you're telling us what size cards to post now, limiting our choice, I remember when we could put a FIRST CLASS stamp on a A4 size card weighing up to 60g and it got there, now we have to queue for half an hour and then wait while the post office assistant measures and weighs the bloody thing. And this is better??????????

Postwatch is suggesting customers buy cards that can be sent using the 23 pence 2nd class stamp. Apologies if this read like an instruction. If followed the advice will hopefully avoid customers having to queue in post offices to have their cards measured.
The move from weight only based pricing to size and weight was under consideration within Royal Mail for many years and has not, we are told, been introduced as a response to competition.
Absolute rubbish, this is a direct result of competition, as profit is the only way forward now. This is to make up lost revenues because of downstream access, where Royal Mail are NOT allowed to compete in this so called "level playing field".
We do not understand you comment about Royal Mail not being allowed to compete. Could you elaborate please.
Royal Mail cannot lower its prices to compete with other private companies in the downstream access arrangements. Postcomm has put a block on this. Even though Royal Mail still end up sorting it and delivering it.
In addition I suggest that senders should put their address on the envelope.
I am still getting beautiful hand-made birthday and Christmas cards from Auntie Rachel for a previous resident eight years after I moved here. I don't know this past resident and Auntie Rachel doesn't give a family name or an address.
