Latest quality of service results released by Royal Mail

Following the release by Royal Mail of its full-year quality of service results, Postwatch has undertaken a review of these results and found that once again improvements have been made in a number of areas.

Royal Mail’s quality of service is measured against 12 targets, and for the year 2006-07 Royal Mail met or exceeded 11 of these targets. In previous years Royal Mail has failed to achieve many of the set targets, so it is encouraging that the present levels of performance recorded by Royal Mail are good in almost all areas.

The headline figures from the report show that 94% of 1st class mail arrived next day (target 93%) and 98.9% of 2nd class mail arrived within 3 days (target 98.5%). The best performing postcode area in terms of 1st class mail was Derby, which managed to ensure 96.1% of 1st class mail arrived the next day after posting.

Standard Parcels continued to perform above target, with performance recorded at 94.5% (target 90%). This performance was the best annual performance for this product since standards of service measurements were introduced, although performance fell slightly from Quarter 3 of 2006-07.

Performance for Special Delivery for 2006-07 met its target of 99%, recording a performance of 99% for the period. This is encouraging, since Special Delivery is a premium Royal Mail product, and had frequently failed to achieve its target in the past.

In terms of Royal Mail achieving its Universal Service Obligation (USO), the quality of service results showed 99.92% of collection points are being served each day (target 99.9%), and 99.95% of delivery routes are completed each day (target 99.9%).

The only target Royal mail failed to meet for the year was the percentage of Postcode Areas (PCAs) hitting their delivery target of 91.5%. 116 of 118 PCAs met the target, with Exeter and Torquay missing the target by 0.3% and 0.1% respectively.

The overall picture painted by the quality of service results is encouraging. Postwatch is pleased to commend Royal Mail on its performance, and hopes the current high level of service continues.
